This speech will report some recent experiences relevant to COTS used in ESA missions. The reported experiences range over different mission classes and budgets. COTS could be selected for different reasons: sometimes for the excessive cost of possible space-qualified alternatives, but in many cases for specific performances, low power dissipation, and smaller packages than the closest space-qualified alternative.

Introducing the usage in planetary exploration as illumination of surface in robotic lunar exploration needs new testing techniques. Commercial LEDs are available in many packages, most SMD mounting and, in many cases, finished with a silicone glob top. The degradation caused by lunar regolith exposure onto all these options is unknown and shall be assessed by testing.

basics in mind: three sources of radiation cause three different types of effects on a device. The three sources are the Van Allen belts, where protons and electrons are trapped around the Earth in its magnetic field lines. The second radiation source is the Sun, which continuously emits energetic particles toward the Earth. The third source of particles is galactic cosmic rays. These are made up of ions ranging from a simple proton to uranium.
