Space industry is changing very fast since the last few years. With the explosion of the information society a lot of new players have come into the space market. Thanks to them, customers are demanding better specifications and lower prices. This situation is pushing most of the companies to explore new ways of making satellites. When it comes to components, traditional rad-hard parts are progressively been replaced by commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) ones in a lot of applications. In order to have an excellent time performance in the Single Event Latch up (SEL) tests, a lowcost and high-flexibility testing unit has been developed by Thales Alenia Space in Spain called CLARK (Control de Latch up Ajustable y Regulable para Kits de Evaluación).

Mission Profile Evaluation for Automotive Applications An Anthology of Best Practices

The integrated circuits (ICs) to be applied in the automobile industry are qualified according to the Automobile Electronic Council AEC Q100 standard. Since 2014 the AEC Q100 Rev H requests the assessment of mission profiles in close relation between Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and / or the Tier 1s (intermediary industry, supplying directly the OEMs) and the IC manufacturer. A mission profile is the collection of relevant environment conditions, in which the IC will be exposed in a defined application. In this presentation, an anthology of best practices aimed for evaluating mission profiles of ICs for the automobile industry is shown. An overview of the most applied models for thermal, thermo-mechanical and humidity loads is presented. The benefit of applying this method is to perform reliability predictions for targeted applications. The operation of a sensor in a car is taken as an example.

Proton accelerators single event effects test procedure for COTS electronics: approach to reduce cost and time

Modern COTS electronics are widely used for space missions because it’s difficult to find equivalent space electronics or in some cases space electronics is not available for modern IC’s like FPGAs, SoC, DAC/ADC etc. And nowadays it is a trend to plan space missions with “small” spacecrafts like CubeSats (NanoSats) to reduce cost and time to start mission. So, it’s possible to do single event effects radiation test for COTS electronics at proton accelerators only because it’s faster and less expensive than heavy ion test.

Space Equipment with COTS Parts – from design to product

For New Space equipments the price is usually the most critical parameter. However, technical requirements must also be met. In order to meet both goals Equipment and EEE-Parts engineer need to establish an efficient interworking. Both sides have to provide and want to obtain information. The start of this process is usually either an existing classic space equipment or a functional block design of a new equipment. The output should be a EEE-parts list that is sufficient for the developers to make the detailed design of the equipment and does meet the price targets. There are different phases needed to reach this goal. Tesat has performed the tasks for several New Space projects and have gained lots of experience. The presentation will show the process to obtain the EEE-parts list and will show which information is needed from the two sides of the interface between equipment and parts engineer.

CSAM Techniques for COTS Validation

The introduction of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts in the military industry paved the way for the use of plastic encapsulated systems in spacecraft systems. Thus, nowadays such components are experiencing a growing use in space applications. However, there are severe risks inherent to these types of packages. These are mainly related to the lack of hermeticity and the CTE mismatch with the internal inorganics parts and can lead to catastrophic failures such as popcorn cracking, metallic smearing on die surface, corrosion, wire bond cuts, and others. Such anomalies are typically related to the presence of interface delamination, voids in the moulding compound, and cracks within the system. In this context Scanning Acoustic Microscopy has proved to be a very effective way for the non-destructive inspection, screening and failure analysis of plastic encapsulated EEE part. The present communication will report on the critical role that this this tool play to assure the suitable performance of the system and to early detect future functional failures.

A new issue of the standard ECSS-Q-ST-60-13 is currently in preparation. Three main topics will be introduced in this new issue: the parts with pure tin termination, the recognition of the AEC-Q levels and the use of passive commercial parts. These 3 topics will be detailed during this presentation.

AXAXL, a leading space insurer, benefits from a large amount of historical data and is able to deeply analyse satellite failure statistics. When contemplating the usage of COTS, these data are helpful to address some questions to the space community, to understand better and possibly suggest how COTS might be implemented from an insurer point of view. In this presentation, we will address the challenges of using COTS and explore its possible impacts on the space insurance community.

This document will detail the TAS’s experience with automotive devices in the frame of launcher applications (Ariane-6 & VEGA). Main findings in constructional analysis (more than 90 constructional analysis done), incoming visual and Fischerscope and comparison with “Enhanced Plastic” Parts and Other COTS will be described. Extension of Constructional Analysis Table of ECSS-Q-ST-60-13C for RoHS application (e.g, solderability), and for active parts will be proposed. Experience with Manufacturer support for Reliability Data & PPAP report on AEC devices. Procurement lessons learnt with big suppliers (Arrow, Mouser, Digikey, Avnet, etc..) for traceability, lot homogeneity, packaging, storage, incoming, counterfeit, export license, etc. will be also described.

Assessment of automotive EEE Components Suitability for Space applications

This paper will present the assessment of automotive qualified components for Space applications being performed in the frame of ESA Contract 4000126343/19/NL/hh. The proposed work to be performed includes a full thermomechanical and endurance evaluation (2000h life test, 500 cycles -55ºC to +125ºC thermal cycling, HAST or THB) along with constructional analysis and measurements of Tg (glass transition temperature) and outgassing. These tests will be done on three different lots separated by years of lot date codes on three selected AEC-Q candidates (total 9 lots). This testing will allow to confirm manufacturing stability (die mask, assembly techniques, moulding material, etc….) and process variability over time. The three candidates are selected from non-radiation sensitive devices of an “AEC Space PPL” List already compiled from the comparison of what is offered as AEC qualified (AEC QPL list with >200K items) and what is more demanded for Space (Space PPL list from ESCC QPL/QML/PPL, NASA NPSL/GSFC PPL, etc.. with 1500 items).
