Talking on COTS for Space with Dan Friedlander

Welcome to this webinar series dedicated to COTS in space

This webinar series is being hosted in collaboration with Dan Friedlander.

COTS in Space is not new (some 25 years). However, the users are not always aware of the complexity of the subject. In managing the issue, multidisciplinary technical knowledge is required.

Given the complexity and wide perimeter of the subject and the imposed time constraints, a single comprehensive presentation has been divided into a series of short presentations.
The presentations address various aspects of the COTS in Space issue: debunking myths, evolution, ideology, automotive, barriers to be overcome, RHA Component vs. Product, New Space CubeSats, policy-making progress, and pragmatic policy.

Although it is obvious that not every individual presentation is of the same interest to the attendees, to get a comprehensive picture is recommended to attend all the presentations.

Episode 10: Pragmatic Policy Wanted

It seems that the policymakers overestimate their capability to secure or forecast the future availability of the Space/Military Grade EEE Components and underestimate the potential of using EEE COTS Components in space applications.

Episode 1: Introduction

Attending this webinar will provide the audience with a complete view from our expert, starting with and introductory presentation to go deeper into all aspects that might arise when using COTS in Hi-Rel applications like usage principles, debunking myths, automotive components, CubeSats…

Episode 2: Evolution

The legitimization process of using EEE COTS Components in Military and Space materialized due to facing Global Developments.

In this webinar, we will know the main evolution steps.

Episode 3: Usage Principles

The use of COTS justification is based on the idea that high production volume, monitored by SPC (Statistical Process Control), ensures reliability. Reliability has to be built into the product, not tested into it.

Episode 4: Debunking Myths

Various myths related to EEE Components are circulating due to misunderstanding and misinterpretation. The presentation attempts to debunk 16 myths, hopefully helping the community avoid pitfalls.

Episode 5: Barriers to be overcome

It is obvious that many barriers must be overcome in order to reach fundamental confidence in COTS.

The following aspects are presented: Resistance to Change Barrier, Risk Barrier, Obsolescence Barrier, Counterfeit Barrier & Lead-Free/ Tin Whiskers Barrier.

Episode 6: Automotive components

The presentation walks through the AEC-Q100 (ICs) document, highlighting points to be scrutinized before making an educated decision.

The self-awarded status “AEC-Q100” qualified is not a magic term to ensure the space wanted reliability.

Episode 7: RHA component vs. product

The New Space industry resorts to this way of saving. Such a shortcut obviously is cost-efficient, but it still invokes knowledgeable, educated technical decisions. It is not enough to accept some usually undefined risks. The cost of cost-saving has to be known. Even for New Space, the space environment did not change!!!

The presentation presents what you lose and what you gain by such shortcuts.

Episode 8: Policy Making Progress

The presentation contains comments related to the official methodology. The methodology needs an in-depth revisit to become more affordable for the industry and to eliminate nonvalue-added activities. New thinking is needed to adapt to reality.

Episode 9: New Space – CubeSats

The failure rate of CubeSats deserves substantial improvement. The lack of stricter regulation creates more and more serious space debris issues. Active deorbiting of satellites is essential. Some progress in the deorbiting domain is present in the work.
